What is Erectile Dysfunction?

Erectile Dysfunction (ED) is a condition that occurs when a man experiences the inability to achieve and sustain an erection during sexual intercourse. This condition affects roughly 10-20 million men in the U.S. ED is not dangerous, but is associated with vascular disease, heart conditions, renal failure, prostate cancer, depression, and other serious conditions. Male arousal is influenced by many systems working together in the body such as the brain, nervous system, cardiovascular system, hormones, and emotions. These all play a role in stimulating and exciting men in sexual situations. This means there are many contributing factory in the cause of ED.

What causes ED?

Many underlying conditions that cause ED include:

  • Vascular disease

  • High cholesterol

  • High blood pressure

  • Excessive alcohol use

  • Low testosterone

  • Tobacco use

  • Sleep disorders

  • Multiple Sclerosis

  • Psychological conditions such as depression or anxiety

  • Surgical treatments or medical procedures that affect the pelvis

  • Certain medications

  • Lack or reduced sexual desire

What is the treatment for ED?

Due to the broad range of conditions and circumstances that cause ED, there are a range of different treatment options. Treatment can be as simple as stress relief and others may require more serious conditions to be managed as part of a more comprehensive plan administered by your primary care physician.

 

Oral medications such as Viagra and Cialis are FDA-approved medications that work by increasing blood flow to the penis, allowing men to achieve and maintain an erection. They do have potential side effects such as headaches and nausea. These medications should not be taken with certain medications or by patients who have certain medical conditions. It is important to consult with a doctor before starting treatment with any ED medication. In general, ED medications are an effective form of treatment and can help many men regain their sexual function.
